Pictorial Restoration

The aim of painting restoration is essential to prolong the artefact life. It includes two main measures, aesthetic and conservative restoration. Anyway it will be reversible and it will be subjected to an in-depth assessment .

The aesthetic restoration gives legibility back to the artwork. It is not invasive and it complies with the original piece. The first stage is the cleaning of an artefact. Subsequently various methodologies enable a pictorial reintegration such as camouflaging (in order to make invisible the restoration interventions), rigatino (application of small lines) and chromatic selection. These techniques might be recognisable from a short distance and they are especially used in museums.

The conservative restoration is instead a consolidation treatment regarding bracket, preparation and colour of an artwork. It rules out both reconstruction and reintegration processes. The conservative procedures improve the artefact mechanical features. They moreover try to stop the already existing biological, physicochemical degradation conditions.
